Human Considerations for Manned Mars Mission
F. Winisdoerffer
Abstract
INTRODUCTION
Human considerations relate to the needs of the users in the design of systems and
operations with the goal of enhancing functional effectiveness while
maintaining(enhancing) the well-being of the person (e.g. physical and mental health
both individually and as a group, safety and satisfaction).
In order to avoid possible misunderstanding relaxed to a restrictive semantic
interpretation of the words "human factors", we will use the generic term "human
considerations" to take the broadest approach possible by answering the basic question :
"What do we need to know and to do in order to maintain healthy crewmembers going
to, staying on, returning from the surface of Mars safely?"
Traditionally, life sciences are divided within NASA in twelve discipline :
Behavior/performance and Human Factors, Regulatory Physiology, Cardiopulmonary,
Environmental Health, Musculoskeletal, Neurosciences, Radiation Health, Cell and
Developmental Biology, Plant Biology, Regenerative Life Support Systems, Planetary
Protection, Exobiology.
All are inter-related and will be briefly surveyed with particular attention to
Behavior/performance and Habitability.
